Long days in the Land of the Midnight Sun

The wilderness setting of Gate Creek Cabins offers the peace and quiet of a private, relaxing wilderness cabins away from the big hotels crowded with tourists, but also many unique opportunities for outdoor adventure. We can help you explore Alaska by designing a customized package especially suited to your interests. You can have lots of fun without ever leaving our property, or drive to nearby hikes and fishing.

The quaint town of Talkeetna is one of Alaskans’ favorite in-state getaways, with lots of great shops, cafes and art galleries. Grab a locally made ice cream cone or cappuccino and stroll the historic town or hop on a float plane for a flightseeing tour. And we’re within a couple hours’ drive from both Denali National Park and Anchorage, where you can go river rafting, bear-viewing, salmon fishing and much, much more.

Weather

Summer temps can range from the mid 50’s to the mid 80’s. June and July are great summer adventure months. Although it may be sunny and warm the entire time you are at Gate Creek Cabins, it’s always wise to dress in layers and to bring rain gear when visiting Alaska.

Fishing

We have outstanding salmon and trout fishing in the Petersville area, which fortunately experiences less pressure than other drive-to areas of Alaska (meaning far fewer people on the rivers and lakes).

Gate Lake is stocked with rainbow trout annually by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Gate Creek guests may fish right from our docks or use our watercraft. We provide limited poles and tackle so you might bring your favorite lures and bait for lake trout. King, red and silver salmon make their way up the local rivers and creeks during mid- to late summer. In addition, rainbow trout, grayling and Arctic char are fished in local streams. Northern pike are found in many of the lakes that dot the area.

Photography/Wildlife

Summer or winter, our part of Alaska is a photographer’s paradise, surrounded by snowcapped mountains, broad vistas, free-roaming wildlife and glorious Arctic lighting. On any given day, you might see ducks, eagles, geese, loons, owls, cranes, moose, wolves, wolverines, fox, black bear, grizzly bear, and much, much more! Moose wander the premises almost every day in the summer.

Hiking/Exploring

This spectacular and untamed country will be enjoyed most by people willing to hike the nearby mountains, walking the tundra, or paddle the rivers. Within 30 miles, the Peters Hills, Dutch Hills, and Denali State Park offer many opportunities to leave civilization behind, even if just for a few hours. You won’t be able to do everything in one day. Plan accordingly.

Relax

Doing nothing here has its rewards. Plan to spend some time lounging on your cabin deck listening to loons singing, taking a quiet stroll around our gardens or serenading your bride with a romantic canoe ride around the lake.

Weddings

Our beautiful gardens and lush, green lawns are a gorgeous location for outdoor weddings. We can assist you with tables, chairs and tents. No need to hurry home – your guests can stay in our fully-furnished cabins. Meals can be prepared on the premises or catered.
