Alaska Winter at Gate Creek Cabins

Alaska Winter At Its Finest

Welcome to the Gateway to South Denali. Many believe the “Greater Petersville Area” to be Alaska’s Premier Winter Recreational Playground! Hold your breath–this beautiful country is a land of a thousand postcards! Enjoy wildlife and spectacular scenery–so don’t forget your camera! Are you looking for the Ultimate Winter Recreational Activity? Try Gate Creek Cabins Snowmobile Adventures. We offer a wide range of Snowmobile Tours, for the absolute beginner, or more exhilarating advanced back country excursions for seasoned riders.

We rent snow machines by the day, but only to be used in the Petersville Area. The Peters Hills, Dutch Hills, Denali State Park, and several glaciers are easily accessible with over 400 miles of groomed and marked trails. Start to enjoy incredible vista’s of Mt. McKinley, Mt. Hunter, Mt. Foraker and the entire Alaska Range just a mile away from our doorstep. For powder riders, there are over a million acres of meadows and frozen swamps to carve up. Or, take a short ride up into the lower mountains for some safe hill climbing. Avalanches are rare in this area.

All of our tour and rental machines are new, or late model, and made for deep powder and mountain riding. They are easy to handle, for riders of all sizes. Our machines are well maintained and in new/like new condition. We sell premium fuel, belts, plugs, oil, and coolant for most snowmobile brands. Also, we have towable sleds with pin-type hitches for rent.

For more quieter winter experiences, try cross-country skiing or snow shoeing. There are nearby cross-country ski trails, or we can groom a trail for you. We do not have skiing equipment or snow shoes for rent. Or, give ice fishing a try on Gate Lake, and other area lakes. We have ice fishing equipment, an ice auger, and sonar available. We can teach you what we know about the sport.

The Weather. Contrary to what most outsiders think, Alaska is not a frozen ice box in the winter. That is especially true of Southcentral Alaska where Gate Creek Cabins is located. The Susitna Valley’s weather is influenced by the warm breezes from the Pacific Ocean moving up the Cook inlet. The nearby Alaska Mountain Range and Talkeetna Mountains trap the warm air and shelter us from the bitter cold to the north. In the coldest part of winter, daytime temperatures usually reach into the mid-20 degree range, while night time temperatures rarely drop below zero in our area. By late February, it is common for daytime temperatures to hover above freezing. It doesn’t stay dark here on the shortest days in December either. The sun is above the horizon for about 5 hours, and just below for a few hours more, giving us about 8-hours of light. By March, we have 12-hours of daylight.

Snow. The Petersville Area receives more snow than other areas of Interior Alaska. Gate Creek Cabins tends to be on the dividing line, with lighter snowfall to the south and east, and much more to the west and north. In a typical year, we may get up to 14-feet of snow. Often we have several more feet of snow than Trapper Creek (12-feet average), just 10 miles away. The Peters Hills and Dutch Hills just 10-miles to the west may get as much as 18-feet of snow in a season. Don’t worry about getting here. The DOT keeps Petersville Road plowed to mile 14 at the Kroto Creek Parking Area, and plows right past our door. After the snow settles and compacts, getting around by snow machine is fairly easy. And, you can go just about anywhere you point your skis.
