Summer at Gate Creek Cabins

Long days in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" give you lots of hours for summer time activities. The wilderness setting of Gate Creek Cabins offers many unique opportunities and we can help you explore them by designing a customized package especially suited to your interests. Petersville road offers drive-to vistas of the Alaska Range, including 3 of the tallest mountains in North America: Mt. McKinley, Mt. Foraker, and Mt. Hunter. In addition, we compliment your Alaskan Vacation with opportunities to play onsite! We offer lake fishing, canoes and paddle boats, wildlife viewing areas, sand volleyball, children’s play center, horse shoes, or a rousing game of croquet. For “up-close and personal” adventure, try our  scenic nature viewing, fishing, photography, or gold panning excursions–we have family-friendly rates. In the late summer, we are surrounded by berry picking opportunities. We spray our grounds for mosquitoes, but we can’t keep them all away.

Climate. Summer temperatures can range from the mid 50's to the mid 80's. June and July are great summer adventure months. Although the weather may be sunny and beautiful the entire time you are at Gate Creek Cabins, it is wise to expect some kind of precipitation. It is highly recommended to always dress in layers and to bring rain gear or waterproof clothing.

Fishing. Try the outstanding trout and salmon fishing in the Petersville Area during the summer. We have less pressure than other drive-to areas of Alaska with no “combat” fishing. Gate Lake is stocked with rainbow trout annually by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Guests may fish right from our docks, or use our watercraft. We provide the tackle. King (chinook), red (sockeye), and silver (coho) salmon make their way up the local rivers and creeks during mid-to-late summer. In addition, rainbow trout, grayling, and arctic char are residents in the local streams. Northern pike are found in many of the lakes that dot the area. Regulations vary from year-to-year. Adults (16+) may purchase an Alaska fishing license online from ADFG. Children younger than 16 do not require a license.

. Rugged mountains, broad vistas, the midnight sun, diverse wildlife, abundant and unique arctic lighting offer exceptional photographic opportunities. There are opportunities for viewing most of the land-based wildlife that live in Alaska. Within a short drive from Gate Creek Cabins on any day you might see ducks, eagles, geese, loons, owls, cranes, moose, wolves, wolverines, fox, caribou, black bear, grizzly bear, sheep, and much, much more! Moose wander the premises almost every day in the summer. They like it here–you will too.

Hiking/Exploring. This spectacular and untamed country will be enjoyed most by those who are willing to spend time climbing the nearby mountains, hiking the tundra, paddling the rivers, or just sitting back and taking in the beauty of Alaska. Within 30 miles, the Peters Hills, Dutch Hills, and Denali State Park offer many opportunities to leave civilization behind, even if it is for a few hours. Although many of these sites are remarkably accessible, some demand a significant investment in time and effort on the part of the traveler. You won’t be able to do everything in one day. Plan accordingly.

Just relax. Your Alaskan adventure vacation should include a chance to relax; whether it be lounging on your cabin deck listening to the evening loons, taking a quiet stroll around our gardens, or serenading your bride with a romantic canoe ride around the Lake (please bring your own Ukulele).

. Gate Creek Cabins beautiful gardens and lush green lawns make a great location for outdoor weddings. We can assist you with tables, chairs, and tents. There is no need to hurry home–your guests can stay in our fully-furnished cabins. Meals can be prepared right on the premises, or catered.

Late Summer/Fall. August tends to be a bit wetter. However, the berries ripen, the bugs let up, and salmon fishing opportunities abound. Bring rain gear. September brings glorious, spectacular fall colors to the Region. The tundra foliage becomes a rainbow of color. The crowds disappear, and you can explore the beautiful scenery in relative seclusion. The clear crisp days provide outstanding views of Mt. McKinley (Denali). Animals come out of hiding. The bears are busy feeding on spawning salmon and fattening up on berries. The bull moose show off their magnificent sets of antlers. Fishing is great in the local streams and lakes.

Area Attractions. The Talkeetna Area, about 40-minutes From Gate Creek Cabins offers many shopping, dining, and recreational activities. Flight-seeing, river rafting, zip line tours, and a host of other adventures await. Then return to Gate Creek Cabins for quiet solitude at the end of a busy day.
